In the middle of the Piazza San Pietro is a gigantic Egyptian obelisk (25,37 meters high, plus 15 meters with the base, and weights 331 tons), originally erected in Heliopolis by King Nuncores. It was first brought to Rome by the Emperor August, and placed in the Julian Forum of Alexandria, where it was until year 37 and moved to Rome by Emperor Caligula (34-41 A.D.) and set up in the dividing island of his circus in the Vatican Meadows. This circus was later renamed Nero's Circus. The obelisk was then dedicated to the Sun and his predecessors August and Tiberius.
It was on the Neron Circus where innumerable Christians, including Saint Peter found their death. This obelisk is a silent witness of the of the martyrdom of Saint Peter. It was placed in its current location in front the the basilic of San Pietro in 1586 by Sixto V. Eighty years later Bernini designed the Piazza San Pietro with the eliptic colonnades, around the obelisk. In 1818 four Egyptian lions were added to the base.
