Piazza del Popolo was designed by Valadier at the beginning of the IX century; it is considered as one of the best urbanistic buildings in the city. In the middle of the big space the second biggest obelisk in Rome. In 1589, Pope Sixtus V had an Egyptian obelisk moved from the Circus Maximus to the center of the square. The 23,2m/73ft high obelisk was originally built in 1300 B.C. and was taken from the Sun Temple in Heliopolis in 10 B.C. by the Roman Emperor Augustus. The obelisk was erected at the Circus Maximus to commemorate the conquest of Egypt.
